Starter’s Protocol

by Intermountain Freestyle

If you have volunteered for the Start position, here is some information to review.

Equipment and Materials

(we will provide)

  • Radio
  • Start List
  • Pencil

During Training

Control the Start.  If training needs to be paused, you will be notified by radio.  Tell the athlete to stop.  Once the course is cleared, training can resume.

During the Competition

Singles

Between you and the Assistant Starter, visually check that the next 3 athletes are ready.
NOTE: You and the Head Judge both have Start Lists.

Cadence

Head Judge: “Proceed with the next competitor”
Starter: “Bib 22.  Competitor Ready.  3, 2, 1, Go!”  Say “Go” when the athlete’s boots cross the Start Line.  Might be “Competitor Ready.  Go” or might be “Competitor Ready.  3, 2, 1, …delay… Go”
“Go” signals the Backup Timers to start their stopwatches.

If a competitor is not present

Head Judge: “Proceed with the next competitor”
Starter: “Bib 22 is a DNS.  Bib 46 is in the Start.”
Head Judge: “Proceed with Bib 46.”

The Athlete’s Journey

February 13, 2026 by Intermountain Freestyle

Intermountain Freestyle was honored to host The Athlete’s Journey, a powerful evening made possible by our key sponsor, Black Diamond Financial. It was a privilege to have Olympian Troy Murphy lead the conversation, sharing the grit and dedication required to reach the world stage. Joining him were Ryan Koemans from RM Koemans Construction and Lulu Shaffer, who offered invaluable perspectives on how the lessons learned on the mogul course translate into success, resilience and passion in life off the mountain. Their combined stories provided athletes, parents, and coaches with a roadmap for excellence both in and out of the starting gate.

Hand Timer’s Protocol

by Intermountain Freestyle

Thank you for volunteering for this important position!!

Materials

  • Radio
  • 2 stopwatches
  • 2 Clipboards with Start Steno Sheets
  • Pencils
  • 2 Chairs

Primary and Secondary Backup Timing will be positioned at the Finish Line.

Singles

You start the stopwatch when the athlete crosses the Start Line and stop the stopwatch when the athlete’s boots cross the Finish Line.  Record the time on your steno sheet.

Cadence

Over the radio, the Starter will say *Competitor Ready… 3, 2, 1, Go!”
“Go” is your signal to start the stopwatch.  The Starter will say “Go!” as the athlete’s boots cross the Start Line.  You may hear “Competitor Ready… Go!”, or ”Competitor Ready… 3, 2, 1, …delay…Go!”, or 3, 2, Go.  Start your stopwatch when you hear Go regardless of what words are said before Go, and regardless of whether there is a long delay between the countdown and Go.

Stop your stopwatch when you observe the athlete’s boots cross the Finish Line.  Record the time.

There may be 2 backup hand timers.  One primary and one secondary.

If the Head Judge calls for “Hand Time” over the radio, read the primary time over the radio.  If the primary hand time was missed, read the secondary time over the radio.  If both are missed, report “Backup Timing Not Available.”

Please return this to Scoring at the end of the event
